Abstract. The thirteenth century Life of St. Alexander Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod, is not only a representative of an important genre in medieval Slavic literature (both Russian and Serbian): kniazheskie zhitiia derived from the Byzantine basilikos logos; it also offers a fresh interpretation of the Book of Isaiah on the basis of perceived similarities between Prince Alexander and King Hezekiah. The article addresses a long-standing problem of the history of Russian: the origin of v in place of the etymological g in the Gen. sg. masc./neut. ending of adjectives and non-personal pronouns.
